EUQ Anti-Spam Tool

End User Quarantine or EUQ has been implemented by TCU in an effort to reduce the amount of SPAM received.  This anti-SPAM solution allows us to quarantine e-mail messages identified as SPAM into a personal folder for your review.  If a message is NOT SPAM, you can release it from quarantine; otherwise it will automatically be deleted after 18 days.

What happens when a message is quarantined?

Twice a day, EUQ will check to see if you have any new messages in quarantine. If so, a notification will be emailed to you.  A sample notification message is displayed below.

The notification e-mail contains the following information:

  • A hyperlink you can use to access a list of all your quarantined messages. (We recommend not bookmarking the hyperlink.)
  • Specific information regarding the quarantined message(s)
    • Message ID – click this to release the quarantined message
    • Sender – e-mail address of the sender
    • Subject
    • Size (Bytes)
    • Date
    • Info
    • Multiple Recipients – indicates if this message was sent to more than one recipient at TCU.

How to release a message from quarantine

To release a single message, click on the Message ID in the left column.  This will release the e-mail to you and to any other TCU recipients.

To manage multiple messages, use the link at the top of the notification e-mail.  A new window appears and allows you to view, release or delete all your current quarantined messages.  You can use this hyperlink to view your quarantined messages as often as you like until you receive the next notification. You should always use the newest notification hyperlink you have. Notifications are generated at 7am and 4pm daily.

To delete an entire page of quarantined messages click on the Delete header.  Each message will be marked for deletion.  Click on the Submit button to delete.

    Identifying SPAM

Special filters examine incoming messages to identify SPAM.  A point system is used.  If an e-mail fails a filter a certain number of points are assigned.  If the points exceed 50 after going through all the filters, then the e-mail is put in quarantine.  The points assigned by these filters are adjusted and fine-tuned continuously to allow “good” e-mail through, but to quarantine e-mail most likely to be SPAM.

While the End User Quarantine will not stop SPAM entirely, it will allow us to keep it to a minimum and allow you to determine if you are missing mail that may have been misidentified as SPAM.

If you do receive e-mail that you believe may be SPAM that was not quarantined:

    • Do not open e-mail that is obviously SPAM.
    • Send it as an attachment to SPAMfeedback@tcu.edu within a week of receipt to ensure a timely response.  When sent as an attachment we are able to gather important information that will help us adjust the points assigned by the filters
    • See below for instructions on how to send e-mail as an attachment.
