Parallels Guide

If you are operating Parallels for the first time, you will find the following information helpful as you navigate through the various menus and key commands on your iMac, MacBook Pro or Mac Pro G5.


 

Starting Up

  1. Select the Parallels icon to open up the Parallels Desktop and Configuration Editor.

     

     


  2. Click the green arrow to Power-On the virtual machine.  You will begin to see the Windows XP startup screen and the standard welcome screen.

 

 

 


Logging In


Click in the Parallels desktop window.

 

Laptop Keyboard Users:

  • Press fn+ctrl+alt+del to display the Log On to Windows dialog box. 
  • Enter your user name, password and log on to TCU.

 

Desktop Keyboard Users:

  • Select VM from the menu bar.  Click Send Keys, then select Ctrl+Alt+Del to display the Log On to Windows dialog box.
  • Or press Control+Option+Delete on the keyboard. 
  • Enter your user name, password and log on to TCU.

 

 

 

 

 

Navigating


After successfully reaching the XP desktop, remember these important navigation tips:


 

The Cursors

  • The black cursor indicates you are working on the OS X desktop.
  • The white cursor indicates you are working on the XP desktop.

 

Right-Clicking

  • To right-click, hold down Shift+Control on either laptop or desktop keyboards and use your mouse or touchpad to select your desired item.
  • You can also right-click using the laptop touch pad by holding two fingers on the touch pad and clicking on the icon you wish to manage.
  • If the touch pad doesn’t allow you to do this, make sure to turn on Tap track pad using two fingers for secondary click found under OS X’s System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Trackpad/Trackpad Gestures.

 

Locking & Unlocking The XP Screen

  • To lock the screen while in XP, press Command+L
  • To unlock a Laptop:  press fn+crtl+option+delete and log back in.

  • To unlock a Desktop:  press Control+Option+Delete and log back in.

 

 


Accessing Your Programs / Applications

 

Simply click on the Start button in the lower bottom-left hand corner of the desktop.

 

 

Switching To Fullscreen Mode

 

To switch to Fullscreen selelct View, Fullscreen from the menu bar.  The screen will immediately rotate to only display the XP desktop.

 

 

Switching Back To The OS X Desktop

To switch back to the Mac OS X desktop press Ctrl+Option or Option+Return.


 

Create Sharing Between Desktops

 

Follow these steps to share files between the Mac desktop and the XP desktop:

  1. Launch Parallels from the Mac OS X Dock.
  2. Select File, Edit Configuration.
  3. Click on the Shared Folders resource in the left-hand column to highlight it.
  4. Look at the right-hand side of the window below the Shared Folders button and check Enable Shared Folders, if it has not already been checked.
  5. Next, click on the + symbol to add your connecting folder. Shared Folder Properties will be displayed.
  6. In the Name: field type M2PC-PC2M to create your connecting folder that will be shared between desktops.
  7. Click on the Browse button to the right of the Path: field to display the Mac Choose Folder dialog box.
  8. Choose Desktop in the left column.  Click New Folder and name the folder M2PC-PC2M, press Create. A folder with that description will appear on your Mac desktop. This is your bridge to the XP desktop.

  9. Click the Choose button.
  10. Click Ok. The name of your shared folder will be displayed under the Shared Folders mapped between the XP desktop to the Mac desktop.
  11. Click Ok and start (Power-On) the virtual machine (XP).
  12. Once logged into XP, look for your Parallels Shared Folders icon on the XP desktop

  13. Double-click the icon to see the shared folder created on the Mac desktop.
  14. You can drag this folder out and onto the XP desktop to create a shortcut.
  15. From this point, if you are logged in and working on the XP desktop you can download files, create files and share them between desktops by dragging and dropping into the folder

Note: Remember, on XP you can only install applications when you are logged in as local_admin.
