Reconnect Your Computer

Here are some basic instructions and visual aids to help you reconnect your PC computer in the event that is needs to be disconnected and moved.

 

Below is a photo of a typical rear panel on most PC computers on campus:

 

 

 

 

Power Outlet

 

 

 

Pictured above is the power outlet connection.  You will need to insert the grooved part of the power cable into this port on the rear panel of the computer.  The forked part of the cable needs to be inserted into a power strip or into a wall outlet.  The power cable is pictured below:

 

 

 

 

 

PS2 / Mouse Connection

 

 

 

The PS2 / mouse connection is shown above.  You will need to insert the green PS2 connection that extends from the mouse into the green PS2 / mouse port on the rear panel of the computer.  The PS2 mouse looks like the picture below:

 

 

 

USB Mouse Connection

 

 

 

If your mouse is a USB optical mouse instead of a PS2, it will need to be plugged into a USB port on the rear panel of the your computer.  A USB port is pictured above.  A USB mouse looks like the picture below:

 

 

 

 

PS2 / Keyboard Connection

 

 

 

Above is the PS2 / keyboard connection.  You will need to insert the purple PS2 connection that extends from the keyboard into the purple PS2 / keyboard port on the rear panel of the computer.  The PS2 keyboard looks like this:

 

 

 

 

USB Keyboard Connection

 

 

Your keyboard may have a USB connection instead of a PS2 connection. If so, plug the keyboard cable into the USB port on the rear panel of your computer.  Pictured below is a USB keyboard:

 

 

Network Connection

 

 

 

The picture above shows the connection port for the network.  You need to connect the blue patch cable from the network outlet in the wall to the port in the back panel of the computer.  The following picture is of a network patch cable:

 

 

 

The picture below shows the wall network outlet:

 

 

 

 

Parallel Connection

 

 

 

The picture above shows a parallel connection.  If you have an older printer that has a parallel cable you will connect the printer to this port.  Pictured below is a parallel cable:

 

 

 

The part of the cable that has the screw posts will connect to the computer and the other end will connect to the printer.

 

 

Monitor Connection

 

 

 

 

This is the monitor connection.  You will need to insert the blue monitor cable that extends from the monitor into the blue VGA port on the rear panel of the computer.  The monitor cable looks like this:

 

 

 

You may have a secondary monitor connection that allows you to run dual monitors.  If the secondary connection is a VGA connection, you will need to find the second VGA port on the rear panel of the computer and plug the secondary VGA monitor cable into the secondary VGA port.

 

Instead of a VGA connection, the secondary monitor may have a DVI connection.  The DVI connection on the rear panel of the computer looks like this:

 

 

 

For a DVI connection, insert the white DVI monitor cable that extends from the monitor into the white DVI port on the rear panel of the computer.  The DVI monitor cable is pictured below:

 

 

 

 

Speaker Connection

 

 

 

The speaker connection is typically green.  You will need to insert the green speaker connection that extends from the speaker in the green speaker port on the rear panel of the computer.  The speaker cable looks like this:

 

 

 

Connection Complete

 

Below is a picture of a computer with all components connected.  Once connection is complete, test the computer by turning on the power then check to see if everything is working correctly.  If you need assistance, please call the Computer Help Desk at x6855.
